The world is dying of a terrible affliction.
It's unstoppable, unrelenting and utterly unmerciful.
It's mindless in it's pursuit of chaos and destruction.
It adapts faster than HIV and is more virulent than the flu.

It's name is Humanity.

In the face of such appalling odds, what can save Earth from spiraling into an ever-hastening doom?

Fight fire with fire.

Counter the virus with another, more powerful monster.

Religion.

For the affliction called humanity is unique in that it has something called a consciousness. (not to be confused with what is known as a conscience, which exists on a microscopic level but is not exhibited when the entity is viewed as a whole)

Therein lies it's strongest weapon and asset, but that is also a vulnerability that, with the proper tools, can be exploited to force it to adopt a less malevolent form.

The psyche, which is a key component of the human creature, can be molded and shaped to a very significant degree by external influences, though the limitations set by biological precursors are not to be underestimated.
A proven method of exerting at least marginal control of the insanity that a sufficiently large mass of humans exhibits would be the application of religion by an organised elite of more advanced humans. This converts the chaotic insanity into a more focused madness which directs the destructive energies towards another group so as to halt the self-destruction that would ensue otherwise.
So far, it has only been used to further the ends of the group that whatever religion is specific to.

This human-specific trait can be likened to a virus, a meme which evolves much like biological creatures do, only in the minds of it's hosts rather than in the intricate symphony of the double helix.

The possibilities of this medium are obvious upon inspection. It has been shown to be able to alter the behaviour of statistically significant masses of humans in an observable manner. If properly harnessed, it could stop the human rampage and start the process of healing Mother Earth.

What remains is a careful dissection and examination, followed by reproducible experimentation to determine the mechanisms by which it governs human behaviour. As important would be understanding the traits which make it so infectious. Lastly, an even more virulent meme should be then produced and released to displace existing strains and convert humanity into a benign and perhaps even protective form.

Ideally, the transition process would be as fast and peaceful as possible, so as to avoid protracted and potentially disastrous conflicts which would wreak considerable havoc on the Earth's natural systems.

Mother Earth, in other words, needs divine intervention to ensure her salvation.
